So for a while now I've been following some promising research involving a readily available natural extract from mushrooms that has now been shown to be effective at eradicating Human Papillomavirus (HPV) with only 3-6 months of treatment! Late in 2011, a study was published in the journal Cancer Prevention Research, that found daily dosing of an extract from mushrooms did eradicate HPV infection and may end up preventing cervical cancer as a result1.  At that time human studies were soon to be performed.

Human Papillomavirus, holding the title of the most commonly transmitted STD, carries the dubious distinction of infecting some 70% of sexually active adults and has the single greatest causative relationship to the development of any cancer (cervical cancer). However, something that I didn't know at the time is that it is also been found to be related to other types of cancer. DNA from the HPV virus has been found in 99.7% of cervical cancer biopsies, 95% of anal cancer, 65% of rectal cancer, 60% of oropharyngeal (mouth/throat) cancer, 50% of vulvar cancer and 35% penile cancer according to the Centers for Disease Control.

This mushroom extract is a nutrient soup consisting of complex carbohydrates, minerals, amino acids and lipids. It is a proven potent immune system booster increasing the activity and overall quantity of Natural Killer cells, macrophages & cytokines giving your own body the goods it needs to effectively respond to viral infections and protect against proliferation of tumors.

This all comes to be as a growing body of research has been building on this subject since 1983. And although much of the research was done on radiation's effects on DNA and the development of cancer, interestingly, that is exactly how the HPV virus (and other viruses) promotes tumor growth, through the alteration of proper DNA function.  So really it's not a far-fetched idea to think that this "Mushroom Nutrient Soup" is working in a similar way ... boosting the immune systems effectiveness against viruses as well as radiation. In fact in 2009, the Journal of Radiation Therapy published, "...[medicinal mushroom compounds] improve the body's immune system defense against foreign invaders by enhancing the ability of macrophages, neutrophils and natural killer cells to respond to and fight a wide range of challenges such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites..there is renewed interest in the potential usefulness of beta-glucan as a radioprotective [treatment] for chemotherapy, radiation therapy and nuclear emergencies, particularly because glucan can be used not only as a treatment, but also as a prophylactic [taken in advance for protection]."2

Undoubtedly this information will start to catch on and a plethora of catchy salespersons and advertisements will be hocking the stuff. But as with any supplement, which is unregulated by the FDA, ensure that you trust the source from which you are finding the supplement. Good companies don't need FDA regulation because they pay out-of-pocket for 3rd party testing for toxicity and quality control. these products of course cost a little more but they are safe and can be relied on to be effective.
